Live Decibel Meter / Accuracy
Accuracy
A browser microphone gives an estimate. Hardware, frequency response and browser processing affect its accuracy. DSP checks with synthetic signals do not validate physical sound-pressure accuracy.

Clear limits. Open methods.
Verification status is documented separately. Software checks cover digital signal processing with synthetic signals; no physical calibrated-microphone accuracy test is claimed.
Calibration offset
Place your device beside a trusted sound level meter in steady broadband sound. Use matching weighting and response, then adjust the offset to match. Do not use an arbitrary phone tone as a calibrated reference.

| A-weighting response | 44.1 / 48 / 96 kHz |
|---|---|
| Sine-wave RMS | 1 kHz |
| Energy averaging | 60 dB / 1 s + 80 dB / 1 s → 77.03 dB |
For everyday comparisons and education. Not for legal compliance, medical diagnosis or determining whether exposure is safe.
Educational reference only: the NIOSH model uses 85 dBA for 8 hours and halves the time with every 3 dB increase. An uncalibrated browser reading cannot establish a safe exposure time. Reduce noise and use suitable hearing protection. NIOSH
