Quick Measure — a five-second noise snapshot on iPhone

Quick Measure is a free dB Pulse shortcut that opens the Meter screen, runs a five-second countdown and prepares a shareable snapshot. It is meant for a brief sound check, not a complete noise-exposure assessment.

Use the Home Screen shortcut

Touch and hold the dB Pulse app icon on the iPhone Home Screen and choose Quick Measure. The app opens directly to Meter and shows a countdown. Allow microphone access if this is your first measurement. Keep the microphone clear and hold the phone steady while the countdown runs, rather than measuring the handling noise created by moving it into place.

At the end, the app prepares a text snapshot for sharing and copies the snapshot text to the clipboard. The source workflow takes the then-current reading and its approximate category. Do not describe that output as a five-second energy average or a calibrated peak measurement.

Make the short window useful

A short snapshot works best when the question is also short: what is the sound like here at this moment, or does moving to another part of the room noticeably change it? Choose a representative moment and keep a simple note of where the phone was. If the source cycles on and off, a single snapshot may catch only one part of that cycle.

For comparison, repeat from the same position with the same microphone and settings. A snapshot taken while a bus passes cannot fairly represent the usual background level. If the variation itself matters, save a longer session so you can review a timeline instead of collecting unrelated single values.

Share the context, not just the number

The share sheet is useful for sending a quick observation or saving it to your own notes. Add the location, time and activity to your message when they matter. A recipient cannot reconstruct your setup from the number alone, and a text snapshot is not independent evidence that a specific source caused a nuisance.

Review the destination before sharing. The fact that a result started inside the app does not keep it private after you choose another app or recipient. Only include personal information that the recipient needs.

Use the smallest suitable feature

Quick Measure is free and available without Pro. A current value can also be copied directly from Meter; saved sessions are the better route when you need a time series. Siri and Shortcuts offer another route into Quick Measure when launching the measurement hands-free is useful.

All of these routes retain the phone’s measurement limitations. Keep the device out of pockets and away from rubbing fabric, avoid blocking the microphone and do not use the snapshot to determine a safe exposure time. For certified accuracy, use a suitable calibrated instrument and an appropriate measurement method.
